The Confraternity of Penitents is a private Catholic association of the faithful whose Rule of Life is based on a Rule given by St. Francis of Assisi to the laity in 1221. It differs from Catholic Third Order groups in that it is not directly affiliated with any specific Order. The focus of the Confraternity is "not on the charism of a certain founder but rather on penance as practiced by all the saints and preached by Christ."
